Made in Scotland: Missa & Kissa

We love to interview makers that are designing and creating their beautiful pieces in Scotland, and especially when we find someone in Edinburgh, just like us! We’re delighted to be interviewing Cecilia, founder, designer and maker from Missa & Kissa this month. Cecilia creates timeless, high-quality jewellery that’s beautiful, accessible and safe for sensitive skin. What more can you ask for?! While exploring Edinburgh we found Missa & Kissa stocked at stores throughout the city including the Scottish Design Exchange on George Street and Jaune on Rose Street and were drawn to their simple and stylish minimalist designs. We’re already planning to expand our own jewellery collections. Read on to find out more from Cecilia!

Can you tell us how your business got started?

I’ve always loved jewellery, but as someone with a nickel allergy, finding pieces that were both affordable and skin-friendly felt impossible. So many times I’d put on a beautiful pair of earrings, only to end up with unbearable itching ten minutes later. A couple of years ago, while tidying my room, I found a pile of jewellery I had bought just before the pandemic – now tarnished, forgotten, and never worn. That moment really stuck with me. Why was I still trying my luck, hoping to find the perfect jewellery when I could just create my own? And that’s exactly what I did and how MISSA & KISSA was born.

Where do you look for inspiration when you are designing new products?

I find inspiration everywhere, but mostly in clean lines, nature, and the little details in everyday life. I’m drawn to effortless beauty – organic shapes, flowing curves, and soft textures that naturally fit into our simple, minimal style.

Sometimes, inspiration comes straight from our customers. I love hearing their ideas and seeing what they’re drawn to – it makes my work feel even more personal. And at the end of the day, every piece has to be something I’d genuinely wear myself. If I wouldn’t reach for it, it doesn’t make the cut!

Can you tell us a bit more about how you make your products?

The process always starts with a spark of an idea – sometimes from a quick sketch, sometimes just from playing around with materials. I’ll gather the components and put together a rough shape to visualise how it all comes together. Then comes the fun part – adjusting, refining, and experimenting with different sizes and proportions until it feels just right. It’s a mix of creativity and instinct, improving the design bit by bit until it becomes something I’d love to wear myself.

What are your most popular products and which are your own favourites?

Our most popular piece is the Lena Pearl Necklace, and it’s easy to see why. With a sleek snake chain and luminous freshwater pearls, it strikes the perfect balance between elegance and simplicity. The adjustable length makes it easy to wear – effortless for every day yet special enough to stand out. This one is also a personal favourite and holds a special place in my heart. I wore it to the UK Jewellery Awards when we won Emerging Jewellery Brand of the Year – and now every time I see it, it takes me right back to that unforgettable moment.

Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat

If you had to pick one place in Scotland to recommend that people visit, where would it be?

I’d have to say Arthur’s Seat/Holyrood Park. It’s a relatively easy climb, right in the heart of the city, but once you’re at the top, the view is something else—you get to see Edinburgh stretched out on one side and the sea on the other. For me, it’s the perfect place to clear my head. Standing up there, everything just feels a little lighter, and whatever was stressing me out suddenly seems more manageable. Plus, it’s a great reminder of how beautiful this city (and life) really is.

Oh, there are so many amazing Made in Scotland businesses, but two that I absolutely love are:

Neon Magpie – I shared our shop, Jaune, on Rose St with them, and they create the cutest Scotland/Edinburgh-themed prints, cards and gifts. Their designs are so fun and full of personality – perfect for locals and visitors alike!

Woolkind – They make beautiful, made-to-order knitwear with a real focus on sustainability. They’re so transparent about where their wool comes from and how it’s made, and I love their values just as much as their products.
