The Rose & Crown on Rose Street
This narrow cobbled street, between Princes Street and George Street, forms an integral part of Edinburgh’s New Town (a UNESCO World Heritage site) designed in the 1760s as part of the city’s northward expansion. Originally named after the rose in the English royal badge (and to thematically tie in with nearby Thistle Street), Rose Street was initially conceived as a service lane for the grander homes on nearby streets. By the 19th century, it had developed into a vibrant commercial district with a distinctly working-class character, housing tradesmen, small workshops, and a burgeoning pub scene that catered to local laborers.

Since the 1800s, Rose Street has been a hub for Edinburgh’s drinking establishments, and by the mid-20th century, it had earned fame for the “Rose Street Crawl” – a legendary drinking challenge involving a pint at each of its numerous establishments. While we don’t recommend attempting this feat, sampling a few carefully chosen venues is essential. Pubs like The Abbotsford, with its ornate Edwardian mahogany bar dating back to 1902, offer a glimpse into Edinburgh’s storied drinking heritage alongside perfectly poured pints of local ales.
