Scottish Knitwear Designed by Bill Baber Knitwear in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

About Us

A family business, established in Edinburgh 1977

Bill Baber Knitwear opened our doors for the first time back in 1977 and have been producing the finest Scottish knitwear ever since.

Helen & Bill Baber design and produce the whole collection themselves, with a little help from time to time. The collection includes mostly ladies wear, with some unisex styles, sorry guys! You’ll find full length silk jackets, luxuriously soft cashmere shawls, lightweight linen tops and stunning accessories to pep up any outfit. The widest selection can be found in store at 66 Grassmarket, however we do have a collection available online for you to enjoy and we even supply other retailers all over the world!

On this site you will see garments that we carry in stock or produce to order. in some cases we may hold a little stock ready to go, but generally each items is made from scratch when you order it. In store we have a boutique collection many of which simply cannot be reproduced, sometimes the yarn has run out or the style was a one off creation.

For over 40 years now Helen & Bill Baber have been designing and knitting a collection that showcases the finest heritage yarns whilst delivering contemporary style.

We are an artisan craft business and produce our entire collection under our own roof. From yarn selection, through knitting and hand finishing we strive for the highest levels of quality and take great care and attention with each and every garment we produce.

We hugely value each and every visitor to our workshop and you’ll always see a smile on our face when you pop in through the door. Many of our customers have been coming back year after year and we are so lucky to be based in such a wonderful city that keeps people coming back time and again.

On any visit into our Workshop in Edinburgh you will see us knitting, steam pressing, washing, linking or hand sewing knitted garments – we love our craft and take great pride in sharing it with you.

How We Knit

Artisan sensibilities with great attention to detail

Lowlands, Highlands & Islands

Scotland is a superb home and a wonderful destination for a visit. If you have not been before then shame on you, if you have then when are you coming back?

Tours will take you all through the countryside, up any number of Munros, across Lochs and Kyles by ferry to Isles and into the granite cobbles and sandstone hearts of our cities.

Glasgow is often wrongly left off a visit, its the contemporary Scottish metropolis, but our little corner of the country is in Midlothian. Edinburgh.

Our home city. Star of so many travellers dreams! Capital of Scotland since the 15th century. Two world heritage sites nestle together creating a vibrant mix of architecture and history. No visit is complete without comparing the chaotic organic layout of the Old Town with the town planning and elegance of the New Town.

Said to be built on seven hills, not unlike another historic European capital, Edinburgh sprawls around the foot of the majestic Arthur’s Seat, points you up to the jagged walls of the Castle and drops down to the shoreline at Leith. Such a vibrant mix of neighbourhoods, if you are visiting don’t miss Morningside, Bruntsfield, The Shore at Leith, The West End and of course our very own Grassmarket!

The Old & New Towns

The Grassmarket

Boutiques, Pubs & Historic Landmarks

Running south & east from the Castle, the Old Town of Edinburgh is the ancient heart of the city, and where you will find Bill Baber Knitwear tucked into the northern parade of the Grassmarket.

Edinburgh’s finest pedestrian square, it is busy all year long as restaurants and pubs cover every available inch with tables & chairs for alfresco diners, in all weathers! Weekends we have a farmers market and throughout the year you’ll see jazz festivals, children’s entertainers, street performers and every facet of local life. Just don’t try to park!
