Can you tell us how your business got started?
Ortak is one of the original Orkney jewellers, handcrafting silver and gold jewellery for over 50 years. Behind Ortak, Managing Director Michael Gardens and fellow Director Alison Firth, stand a highly skilled workforce with over 200 years combined expertise in jewellery manufacturing
Where do you look for inspiration when you are designing new products?
Our in-house designers are never short on inspiration thanks to our beautiful surroundings in the Orkney Islands. Taking inspiration from nature, heritage and our extensive back catalogue as well as looking at current trends gives us a constant stream of ideas. Our skilled team are what bring these ideas to life.
Can you tell us a bit more about how you make your products?
At Ortak we take pride in our manufacturing and supply chain, with every part of the process happening in our workshop in Kirkwall. We combine traditional silversmith skills with the very best in manufacturing technology. Each piece is made with pride before heading out to its new owners.
What are your most popular products and which are your own favourites?
Our Drofn collection has been hugely popular, the sea inspired theme and varying hues of blue enamel remind our customers of the sea which is grounding and calming for so many people. Another favourite has been our statement Archibald Knox piece which is a real showstopper. The classic celtic knotwork is amplified by vibrant enamel.
If you had to pick one place in Scotland to recommend that people visit, where would it be?
We may be biased but the one place you really must visit is Orkney! We’re incredibly lucky to call this beautiful place home.
