Made in Scotland: Fluke Jewellery

Fluke Jewellery

For this week of our Made in Scotland blog series, we are featuring the beautiful, contemporary designs of Fluke Jewellery in Orkney. Inspired by a love of nature, their collection is quite simply magical. We have loved learning more about this small team of talented makers and can’t wait to visit them in person.

Can you tell us how your business got started?

Our Fluke Jewellery story starts with Roger Philby, a man with a deep passion for the natural world and all the creatures in it. His childhood fascination with London pond-life sparked an intrigue in sealife, especially dolphins, whales and porpoises. A fascination which has evolved into a nature inspired jewellery collection.

Where do you look for inspiration when you are designing new products?

Since the early 1980’s Roger spent holidays and study trips aboard the 80-year-old converted Dutch Ketch The Marguerite Explorer (only a few years younger than Roger!! :)) plotting the movement of Cetaceans.

His lifelong fascination with these creatures led to his very first jewellery design based upon a ‘fluke’. And so Fluke Jewellery was born.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you make your products?

Fluke jewellery is designed and manufactured in the Orkney Islands using traditional silversmith methods. We use 100% recycled eco sterling silver and care about our supply chain.

What are your most popular products and which are your own favourites?

Our Groatie Buckie shells are very popular in the North of Scotland. These shells (known as a cowrie shell further south) are a symbol of good luck. Our customers also love our customisable stacking rings.

If you had to pick one place in Scotland to recommend that people visit, where would it be?

Easy – anywhere on the coastline in the Orkney Islands. Full of the raw wonders of nature and you might even spot on Orca if you’re lucky!

We are huge fans of Fluke Jewellery here at Bill Baber Knitwear and really enjoyed browsing their gorgeous designs, maybe some Christmas present ideas here! Fluke Jewellery can be found online here, on Instagram and Facebook.
