St Andrews Day

St Andrews Day

Happy St Andrews Day! Did you know the birthplace of our Saltire flag is a little village named Athelstaneford in the county of East Lothian, just outside Edinburgh?

St Andrews Day

Angus mac Fergus, King of Alba, was at the site of the future village when he prayed for help in the upcoming battle against Athelstan, King of England. He saw a white diagonal cross formed by clouds in the blue sky. St Andrew had been crucified on a diagonal cross and Angus swore that if he won the battle he would see him as the patron saint of Scotland. The Picts won the battle & the rest is history!
