Made in Scotland: Workshop After Six
Our heads were turned by today’s fabulous small Scottish business, Workshop After Six when Lucy came across them in a small store in Edinburgh. Their beautiful handmade leather accessories include wallets, journals, card holders, coasters, key rings, key chains and belts, amongst others. They even have a Scotland range which features the Edinburgh skyline, Thistles, Highland Cows and Stag heads – gorgeous! Can you tell us how your business got started?
My journey into leather craftsmanship began as a beloved hobby. For years, I worked a full-time job from 9 to 6, using my evenings to explore my passion for creating leather goods. It was a fulfilling way to unwind after a long day, and I found immense joy in designing and crafting unique items. When the opportunity arose for me to move to Edinburgh, I saw it as the perfect moment to seize my passion and turn it into my main business. This transition allowed me to fully dedicate my time and energy to leather craftsmanship, leading to the establishment of my brand, “Workshop After Six.” The name reflects my journey of working on my craft after hours, and now, I’m thrilled to share my handcrafted leather goods with a wider audience.
Where do you look for inspiration when you are designing new products?
Inspiration for my designs comes from various sources. Nature plays a significant role; the textures, colours, and forms found in the natural world often influence my work. Additionally, I draw inspiration from historical leather goods and traditional craftsmanship techniques. I love exploring antique shops and flea markets, where I find unique pieces that spark new ideas. Travel also fuels my creativity, as I encounter diverse cultures and styles that I can incorporate into my designs. Finally, engaging with my customers and understanding their needs often leads me to create products that resonate with them on a personal level.
Can you tell us a bit more about how you make your products?
Each of my products is meticulously crafted by hand, ensuring that every piece is unique and of the highest quality. I begin by selecting premium leather, taking into consideration its texture, color, and durability. I always use full grain and vegetable tanned leather. After sketching my designs, I cut the leather pieces with precision, followed by a thorough process of stitching, dyeing, and finishing. I use traditional techniques, such as saddle stitching, which not only adds strength to the seams but also enhances the aesthetic appeal. Attention to detail is crucial; from the way I burnish the edges to the final polishing, I ensure that every step reflects my commitment to craftsmanship. This hands-on approach allows me to create functional art that stands the test of time.
What are your most popular products and which are your own favourites?
My most popular product tends to change over time, but currently, it’s the men’s belts. These belts stand out in the market due to their superior quality and durability, making them a worthwhile investment for customers. They are not just accessories; they are heritage items that can be passed down through generations, which adds to their appeal.
My own favourite creation is the 5-slot card holder. I appreciate its minimal design, which is both stylish and highly functional. I use it myself on every occasion, and its sleek profile makes it easy to carry with me all the time. It’s a perfect example of how form and function can come together in a practical accessory.
Loch Lubnaig
If you had to pick one place in Scotland to recommend that people visit, where would it be?
I love Scotland, I love every bit of it. It is very hard to select just one location among them. However, one of my personal favourite is visiting Loch Lubnaig on a calm day. The view is breathtaking. I just love admiring it and taking it all in.
