The Amazing Benefits of Wool
For the past 40 years of the business, we have used natural fibres to create our garments and wool has always been a favourite.
Wool has a range of desirable properties which make it a valuable material for many different purposes. Not only is it soft and comforting, but clever too!
Temperature control. When wool absorbs water vapour in creates heat, if you go from a warm room to a cold damp night, the wool in your jumper picks up water vapour keeping you warm. The reverse occurs when you go back into the warmth and the water vapour passes out cooling you down.
Practical. Your wool jumper will be easy to clean as the dirt sits on the surface of the fibre and can easily be wiped off. Wool is also naturally anti-allergenic, it doesn’t collect static which can attract dirt and dust mites which is perfect for those who suffer from asthma or eczema. Wool is also a fire-resistant material which would char rather than melt or drip if on fire.
Versatile. Wool has a unique surface structure with jagged edges which point towards the tip of the fibre, allowing the fibres to move easily in one direction over each other but not the other. This is what gives wool the ability to felt. Sometimes we do this purposefully to create dense fabrics such as blankets, some of us may have unintentionally washed our jumpers on a rubbing cycle and caused it to felt!
Sustainable. Wool grows as hair on sheep, goats, llamas and other small animals, so it is hard to find a more sustainable fibre. Wool will last you generations of use!
Flexible. The fibres are elastic, this means it can be easily worn and stretches well while keeping its shape.
Roman ‘national dress’. If there were not already enough reasons to love wool, the roman toga was also made from wool. A semi-circular woolen cloth, usually white, was worn draped around the body. The wool togas hold their shape and kept the roman population comfortable while looking elegant.
