We are very proud members of NACTA: the North American Celtic Trade Association who support the sale & promotion of Celtic products in North America. This year at Showcase Ireland in Dublin, Nacta held their annual awards ceremony to recognise awareness & supply of popular & appropriate products to the North American Market. These awards were voted for by the Nacta members so they are a reflection of the specialist retailers across the continent. Jack & Lucy were lucky enough to have been at the awards having just finished up at the booth in Showcase Ireland at the RDS.
Turns out there was a big surprise in store for us! We were delighted to win the 2019 Product of the Year for our Linen Poncho range! Thank you to all our friends at Nacta for this award – it means a lot to us to have our work recognised by you all.
Watch Jack’s delighted ‘fist-pumping, not letting go of his Guinness reaction in this video! Thanks to Aidan Geraghty for the video footage:
We’ve been making capes (or shawls, or ponchos – we don’t mind what you call them) for over a dozen years now & in all shapes and sizes. Two of our most popular designs, the Ballater and the Wallace, feature prominently in our Grassmarket Edinburgh workshop. They are lovely designs featuring Celtic inspired knotwork along the edging, often picked out in bold contrasting colours. This award however is for a specific variety of shawl, named on the award as the Linen Poncho.
We make our linen capes using a fantastic lightweight linen & cotton blend yarn, sometimes in a single colour, which is quite unusual for us. The Linen cape fits in so nicely in our range as it offer a great balance against the busier more patterned or multi coloured garments in the collection. It’s an oasis of calm or a shock of bold colour in amongst the tweedy autumnal tones or warm multi-faceted merino woollens. Linen is such a versatile yarn as it’s cool & lightweight so offers great properties for wearing all year long. Best of all you can wash it in the machine on a cool or delicate setting! We often pair the cape up with a matching snood & in fact sell these online as a set for a slightly discounted rate than buying separately. However you may like to make your own colour combinations, taking a lovely Tahilla Lilac cape and matching it up with a deep Grape Purple infinity scarf for example!
Having an award for one of our products is such an honour & we are delighted to share the news with you, but we really can’t take all the credit. Nacta represents a network of super knowledgeable & hugely enthusiastic Celtic retailers throughout the USA & Canada. Without their help in showcasing our collection & the Linen Cape in particular, we wouldn’t have won. A huge thanks to everyone who voted for us & who has some Bill Baber Knitwear in their range. Each one is a beacon of Celtic vitality to their local communities & we are so pleased to play our part.
We are always working on new designs and our range of shawls is such a rich vein of creativity & inspiration. Our collection online currently includes many types of capes: using different materials, colours, patterns & shapes. We currently have twelve different types of Capes & Shawls listed on our website & each of those are available in multiple colours, so there is a world of choice!
Our linen capes are available online in 15 colours in linen & cotton or 23 colours in silk, linen & cotton. There are also additional special colours to hand in our Grassmarket Workshop or via our wonderful retail partners.
