We make all of our beautiful knitwear in Scotland & wanted to celebrate some of the other businesses that do the same. Our second featured business in this Made in Scotland series is J Boult Designs based in the Morvern peninsula in the Scottish Highlands on the West Coast of Scotland. Situated near Oban & the Isle of Mull, this is a spectacularly beautiful area which forms a big part of their creative process. J Boult handmake shooting themed gifts from upcycled materials including key-rings, cufflinks, earrings & kilt pins. If you’re looking for an original & creative Scottish gift, then you’re in luck!
“I’m inspired by wanting the owner of each J Boult Designs piece to connect to the hills, glens and lochs of Scotland, reminding them of the natural environment. I think it’s important to be reminded everyday of this, given the context of global warming and just us human beings needing to be closer to the natural world.”
J Boult Designs is the brainchild of Jamie Boult who started the business about six years ago whilst studying design at Edinburgh Napier University. It started as a way for him to make a little extra money on the side of his studies & took off from there. When he graduated he started working full time with the business & his partner, India, joined him about three years ago.
Everything is handmade by Jamie in his back garden Highlands Workshop overlooking the scenic Sound of Mull. He works with leather, antler, cartridge casings & other other up-cycled materials.
“I tend to start with the materials that I use – generally waste materials that I collect or get given to me and then I start to come up with different ideas of products from there.”
Their most popular product is a Shotgun cartridge keyring which is handmade with two up-cycled twelve bore shotgun cartridges wrapped in leather. Jamie’s own favourite product to make is also their newest: the Shotgun cartridge hip flask gift set. He adds “we’ve just realised it which has been exciting and it’s really fun to make with the handmade leather zipped sleeve.”
We at think that Scotland is the most amazing country in the world to visit & live in so we wanted to source some suggestions for beautiful places to see. We’re asking our fellow Scottish makers for their recommendations of where to visit in our gorgeous country. Jamie said “I would have to be incredibly biased and say visit the Morvern (where we are based) and Ardnamurchan peninsulas in the Western Highlands. It’s so wild and beautiful, cloaked in history and past stories, with hills, glens and bothies. It is an adventure to visit for anyone wanting to experience an untouched part of the Highlands. On a sunny day there’s nowhere prettier to visit in the world. “
Thanks so much to Jamie & India for taking the time to chat with us about their beautiful products & for sharing their wonderful pictures with us too. Find J Boult Designs products on their website or follow them on Facebook or Instagram for gorgeous images from their part of the Highlands – well worth checking out for your future holiday plans too!
We hope you’re inspired to look for more Scottish made products, there are so many amazing products out there which are Made in Scotland. Keep an eye on our blog as we will be highlighting more businesses who make their products in Scotland throughout 2020. And do let us know your favourite Scottish makers in the comments, we’d love to find new Scottish businesses to support this year!
