Edinburgh’s Christmas is coming to town from 16th November till 5th January 2019. With so much to offer, now is definitely the time to start planning your Edinburgh Christmas experience – and here is a list of some of our favourite attractions this year.
Silent Light This year, Edinburgh’s Christmas is headlined by Silent Light, one of the world’s largest ‘silent disco’ events. The event will see up to 3,000 people at a time grooving away with headphones on, dancing to music only they can hear that is synchronised to 24 arches of 60,000 lights. The 20 minute silent dance parties will take place up to five times a day, between 16.45 and 22.00, with three different sound tracks including Santa’s Sparkles (especially suitable for families), Christmas Crackers (with all your favourite festive tunes) and Disco Delights (for the party crowd). In keeping with the festive spirit, 50p from every ticket sold will be given to One City Trust, a charity which fights inequality and exclusion in Edinburgh.
East Princes Street Gardens The Princes Street Gardens’ Christmas Market was voted best Christmas market in the UK last year. It offers a wide range of local and homemade gifts, as well as a range of mouth-watering delicacies. The market also features a variety of rides and attractions, including the Forth 1 Big Wheel and the 60 metre high Star Flyer.
Santa Land Younger kids will love Santa Land in Princes Street Gardens, a festive fairground with six fun rides and a children’s market full of gifts and toys. You can try to find the Elves’ Workshop hidden in the Christmas Tree Maze, or visit Santa’s Grotto to meet the man himself.
Winter Windows This special creative project encourages Edinburgh’s young and budding artists to showcase their talents in our streets and community hubs. This year, each stained-glass window is designed around the theme of kindness. Winter Windows will be displayed in West Parliament Square outside St Giles and in four other locations around Edinburgh including Great Michael Rise in Newhaven, Ratho’s North Street, Royston Wardieburn Community Centre in Pilton and St Patrick Square just off Clerk Street.
24 Doors of Advent An opportunity to discover an exciting new place each day, 24 Doors of Advent is a real-life advent calendar taking audiences through a different door every day throughout December. The event offer glimpses into the unique buildings and organisations at work in the city, from Edinburgh Printmakers and Murrayfield to Dovecot Studios and Leith’s Custom House.
Baby Loves Disco’s Christmas Cheer If your little one loves to boogie, Baby Loves Disco is on at the Festival Square Spiegeltent on 9th, 22nd and 23rd December. It is a unique day-clubbing experience for parents with babies, toddlers and young children, and includes facepainting, festive crafts, dancefloor games and giveaways. We will definitely be taking Maisie along!
We think that with so many sparkling winter attractions and events, it is hard to imagine anywhere near as magical as Edinburgh at Christmas.
